Safety at work does not just apply to building sites, warehouses, factories hospitals etc. It's not just about ppe clothing and hardhats. It also is an issue that needs to be addressed in the office work environment. Accidents are just as likely to happen here albeit maybe not such serious accidents. Falls are the most common workplace accident. Many hidden hazards can exist. Such as stair cases with no railings, lose tiles or carpets, spillages not being cleaned up. Other common accidents involve fingers getting caught, be it in draws or in the office equipment. Another hidden hazard for the modern day office worker is an incorrectly set up workstation. This can lead to muscle strain and more long term health issues. These are just three examples of areas for dragnet in the work but there are many more. It is therefore important that all workplaces are assessed on a regular basis and all potential hazards are recognised and removed. This risk assessment exercise may prevent any costly accidents happening in the future. |

I needed some work, as I usually do, and an old lady hired me to do some light cleaning. Under the Trades Descriptions Act, she should have been fined for not describing the job correctly. Her house and farm were wrecked! There were leaves covering every inch of the ground, lumber spread all over the place! I'd been involved in oil tank installation in previous work, but this look even harder. The worst part had to be all the potatoes spread all over the ground, about 3/4 of them rotten. My favorite part was that I wasn't being paid in money...I was being paid with food. Well the whole operation took me about three days. I raked nearly 30 bags of leaves, and 15 boxes full of lumber. I'm not even going to go over the potato situation, it was too gross for the mortal mind. Ah, I forgot to mention the rabbit poop. 30 bags of it had to be moved. Well the farm is spiffy now, and I'm rather proud but its not really something I would ever like to do again, It was more of an act of kindness rather than a job. The old lady really needed the help. |
