There is no work environment that is not susceptible to accidents. Workplace accidents unfortunately do happen. Accidents within the workplace do happen and there are certain things that the employee must know if you are involved in a accident while working.
One of the most common accidents within the workplace is a slip and fall. Slip and falls should be taken very seriously. A simple slip and fall can cause serious injury and should not be taken lightly. I have first hand experience with a slip and fall at my place of employment.
One day I was walked into my building for a usual days work and it turned out to be far from usual. It had been snowing outside and the floor inside my workplace was covered with water and some melting snow. I walked into the front door and almost immediately I slip and fell right on my back.
At first, I was convinced that I was fine. However, by lunch time my back began to throb and I began to acquire a mild headache. My employer encouraged me to go to to the hospital to be examined.
I did end up going to a local hospital and spent around two hours in the emergency room prior to the doctor examining my injury. After I was called, it took the doctor about an hour to give me a complete examination which included x-rays and MRI's of the back and spine.
Almost immediately the doctor noticed an abnormality on the MRI. Apparently, my slip and fall accident had caused me a ruptured disk as well as some bruising. I did return to work later that day to speak with my manager in order to decide what I needed to do.
My employer made sure that all my paper work was in order which included insurance and possible disability papers. I had an appointment the following day with a specialist who would d evaluate and make a recommendation as to the serious of my condition.
As it turned out, the doctor ordered me to take at least a few weeks off from work in order to heal. In addition, the specialist prescribed muscle relaxers to ease the pain that I was experiencing. It seemed within a few days my back pain did intensify.
I ended up staying out of work for five weeks. I was collecting disability insurance and was seeing the specialist. The simple slip and fall had caused me more damage than I could have ever imagined. It doesn't take much to injure the spine and I did injure my spine when I fell.
During my time off from my job, I did consult with a personal injury attorney. The attorney informed me of my rights and gave me some excellent advice on what I needed to do in order to ensure proper payment of my health care costs. In addition, I was given some great advice on how to proceed if I needed to remain on disability for a prolonged period.
Luckily I returned to work after five weeks with some minimal damage to my spine. I still follow up with my doctor as well as some additional physical therapy.
